People
The following is not always an exhaustive list. But don't worry, we aim to catch everybody, with photo so you can see we're all real people here! Our geographic distribution currently spans three continents, and 6 timezones. Read or subscribe to our OQ people blog!
![]() | Arjen Lentz (IRC: arjenAU) helped build MySQL AB (employee#25, 2001-2007) until just before its acquisition by Sun Microsystems. He also co-authored the 2nd edition of O'Reilly's High Performance MySQL book, and speaks regularly at user groups and conferences. Originally Arjen is a C programmer, with coding experience going back to the early 80s. He now uses those skills again with his work on OurDelta - Builds for MySQL, and associated patch management and coding/fixing. He also has a keen interest in Open Source and sustainable business models. Outside work hours, Arjen likes to spend time with his daughter, cook, walk, camp, read, listen to music, and grow herbs/veggies.

![]() | Zak Greant (IRC: ZakGreant) has spent the last 14 years building little parts of the Net, from individual websites up to advising and helping manage the organizations that build important pieces of Internet technology and infrastructure. He's contributed to the PHP project, MySQL AB, eZ Systems, the Mozilla Foundation and the Open Source Initiative.Zak's love of Free Software and Open Source is turning him into a penguin. The only visible changes (so far) are a gradual accumulation of blubber, a loss of hair (which he hopes is the prelude to feather growth) and a growing preference for raw fish.

Peter Lieverdink (IRC: cafuego) happens to speak Arjen's original mother tongue (Dutch) since he too originates from The Netherlands. | |
![]() | Sean Pringle (IRC: aerosuidae) is an experienced MySQL engineer, like Arjen he worked at MySQL AB for a number of years. Sean hacks in C (he wrote his own Linux window manager), PHP, and in the MySQL realm he is very familiar with InnoDB, Cluster, DRBD and the Eventum issue tracking system we use. |
![]() | Ray Cauchi (IRC: rayoq) is an experienced PHP web developer, and loves tuning MySQL. Ray has operated his own web development business since 1999, and has been a Teacher at TAFE NSW since 2000 - where he teaches both PHP and MySQL (amongst other things). Ray has worked with a vast array of clientele, from small business operators through to Government, Educational and Corporate institutions. When not coding, Ray is a keen cyclist and bushwalker, and loves to drive long distances, fast. |
![]() | Walter Heck (IRC: walterheck) has been working in IT since he came out of college in 2001. First as a Delphi-programmer, always working on database driven applications. He gained a lot of experience with different database backends like Oracle and MS SQL Server. When he wanted to switch gears back in 2007 he decided that MySQL was going to be his new focal point. Ever since, he has been studying MySQL, while using it wherever possible. When Walter is not on his computer working, you might find him in your local neighbourhood store, as he is traveling around the world and loves to visit new, simple places to watch people live their lives and learn about their cultures. |
![]() | Toby Thain (IRC: FurnaceBoy) is an Australian who has relocated to Toronto Canada. Coder, on and off, for 20+ years, mainly in C, but then diverse languages (Perl, PHP, Java, Lua, Erlang, bash, make, ...) and unafraid to dive into assembler. Before moving to full time software engineering, Toby had a background in digital graphic arts and web development, system administration, and open source hacking. Toby started with SunOS 4, then through various Linux distributions, OS X, and he likes to use Solaris 10 on servers. He is currently working on MariaDB and OurDelta builds for Solaris 10 (amd64 and SPARC). |
![]() | Elspeth Thorne (IRC: elspeth) has the self-chosen title of Special Projects Operative, wears a long dark coat, and avoids daylight.
|
![]() | Antony Curtis is an advocate of Open Source software and long-time user of alternative operating systems. His involvement with MySQL spans 10 years and he was a server core developer for MySQL AB from 2003 to 2008. After a stint at Google, he's found a happy sandpit at Open Query where he's allowed to play, and code funky stuff like Arjen's GRAPH Engine concept. |
![]() | Sebastian Bergmann is a long-time contributor to various PHP projects, including PHP itself. He is the developer of PHPUnit and offers consulting, training, and coaching services to help companies improve the quality assurance process for their PHP-based software projects. Sebastian also works for eZ Systems AS on the Workflow Engine for the eZ Components. In his free time, Sebastian likes to hack on Open Source software and to take photographs, preferably while travelling the world.
